Güneş Murat Tezcür (Ph.D., University of Michigan, 2005) is Professor and the Director of the School of Politics and Global Studies (SPGS) at the Arizona State University (ASU), one of the largest, most innovative, and inclusive public research universities in the U.S. He leads a dynamic school with over 50 faculty, 15 staff, 400 doctoral and MA students, and more than 1,600 undergraduate majors. With dedication, empathy, and strategic vision, he oversees all facets of SPGS, including academic programming, inclusive excellence, administrative management, recruitment, fundraising, budgeting, entrepreneurship, and performance.

He is polyglot who is amazed by the diversity of human experience in an increasingly precarious world. He has a deep appreciation for the unparalleled impact higher-education institutions have on the betterment of human life and democratic governance both in the United States and globally.

As a scholar of comparative politics, Güneş explores the trajectories of political violence and politics of identity with a focus on Iranian, Kurdish, and Turkish human geography as well as the United States. He is the author or editor of five books and has published 38 scholarly articles and book chapters. His most recent book is Liminal Minorities: Religious Difference and Mass Violence in Muslim Societies (2024) that won multiple awards. He is also the editor of the Oxford Handbook of Turkish Politics (2022). His research has been supported by leading institutions including the National Science Foundation, the Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation, and the United States Institute of Peace.
